OUR MISSION
We inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.
OUR PROGRAM
Girls on the Run is a transformational physical activity–based positive youth development program for 8 to 14 year-old girls designed to develop and enhance girls’ competencies to successfully navigate life experiences. At Girls on the Run, trained and supportive volunteer coaches teach life skills through dynamic, conversation-based lessons and running games. The program culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5k. The goals (the 5 C’s) of the program are to develop and improve competence, unleash confidence through accomplishment, develop strength of character, respond to others and oneself with care and compassion, create positive connections with peers and adults, and make a meaningful contribution to community, all while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness.
OUR COUNCIL and GOALS:
Girls on the Run – Maine officially became a Girls on the Run council in April 2012 and became a Maine 501c3 in July 2012. Our first teams, a total of 37 girls in Portland, completed their season and celebratory 5k in November 2012. In the past 10 years, GOTR-ME has seen an incredible demand for our programming, and been able to grow beyond Southern Maine to serve more than 8,000 girls across the state. Between 20-25% of girls require financial assistance to order to participate in Girls on the Run. With the help of donors and volunteers, we can continue to establish new sites in new communities and ensure that GOTR is accessible to more girls in Maine.
