2025 Lifeguard Training

Our lifeguard training classes are taught in a blended learning format. Before arriving to the in-person portion of your training class, you must complete the online blended learning which takes approximately 6 hours to complete. The in-person portion of the training class is 21 hours and 30-minutes. The total time of the lifeguard training is 27 hours and 25 minutes.

Prerequisites

• Participants must be 15 years of age on or before the last scheduled day of class.
• Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence and Timed Event

The Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence requires that the participant must swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both. Then they will maintain their position and tread, using only their legs, for 2 minutes. After treading for 2 minutes, the participant will swim another 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both. 

The Timed Event is to be completed within 1 minute and 40 seconds. Starting in the water, the participant will swim out 20 yards and then perform a surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth off 7-10 feet and retrieve a 10-pound brick. Participant will then return to the surface and swim on their back while holding the brick on their chest while returning to their starting point. Participant will then exit the water without using a ladder or stairs. 

Lifeguard candidates must complete their online blended learning upon arrival and bring along a printed copy of their online completion certificate or email it to jjones@embe.org. Lifeguard candidates must attend all in-person sessions of the class.

Successful Certification Requirements

• Completion of all online course content in advance to the corresponding in-person skills sessions.
• Attendance of all in-person skills sessions.
• Active participation during the in-person skills sessions practicing various roles, activities, drills, and scenarios.
• Demonstrate proficiency in all skills.
• Pass the final written exam with a minimum grade of 80%.
• Pass the final skills assessments.

Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid certifications are valid for 2 years.
